Ethernet over Copper
Ethernet over Copper ( EoC ) is a Carrier Ethernet service and is an Ethernet packet based internet access method. Running over copper it is a cost effective alternative to bonded T1 and (fractional) DS3. One of the advantages of Ethernet over Copper is that it is delivered over standard copper phone lines (DS0), so no optical (fiber) circuits are needed. This greatly increases the availability and footprint of carrier Ethernet.
Because Ethernet over Copper is delivered as a true Ethernet handoff, no expensive equipment like T1 or T3 cards are needed. Simply plug the Ethernet handoff straight into a LAN router. Another advantage is its scalability, EoC circuits are available in incremental speeds of 2Mbps, 3Mbps, 10Mbps, and 100Mbps (fast Ethernet).
Carriers like XO Communications and Cavalier Telecom (among others) are able to implement this technology through the Ethernet over Copper equipment of Hatteras.
Ethernet over Copper pricing
Ethernet over Copper is far more cost effective than traditional internet access methods such T1 and bonded T1' Please use the form below to see if carrier EoC services are available in your area, if it is you will be able to compare the pricing point of multiple ethernet carriers.
Ethernet over Copper distance
Ethernet over Copper is distance sensitive, and some carriers have set a distance limit where Ethernet broadband can be delivered over copper, usually this is somewhere around 9000 feet between the customer premises and the LEC’s POP. When the distance is too high, Ethernet over serial (EoS) can be delivered. XO delivers EoS on 7 DS1’s, and EoC over 5 DS0’s.
An Ethernet over Copper circuit is very reliable and has the same SLA as alternative access methods as T1. Using Hatteras equipment it is also very redundant. For example XO Ethernet over Copper running on 5 copper pairs will still function when 3 of the 5 pairs are cut / defect.
