Sunday, November 20, 2011 - Ethernet over Copper (EoC) technology is rapidly taking over market share from bonded T1 line circuits. While EoC was only available in metro areas as NYC in the past, nowadays it’s footprint is much larger and it is available in many areas of the USA, often with multiple service providers in each area. Ethernet over Copper pricing is much lower than that of bonded T1 circuits, and an other advantage of EoC is that it is much easier to upgrade from for example 2Mbps to 10Mbps EoC. A 2 Mbps Ethernet over Copper circuit can cost as little as $220
Ethernet over Copper is an ideal alternative for T1 and bonded T1 customers who are looking to upgrade their bandwidth. It is typically available at 2Mb, 3Mb, 4.5Mb, 5Mb, 6Mb, 10Mb, 15Mb, 20Mb, speeds. Update: 100 Mbps EoC now availables
One of the great advantages of Ethernet over Copper is that it is delivered (what’s in a name) over copper pairs of DS0 so EoC does not require expensive fiber build outs. The reliability is the same as a T1 or DS3 line, in fact Ethernet over Copper is even more redundant because it uses multiple pairs of copper. When a single pair goes down, you do not lose the whole connection. Metro Ethernet can also be delivered as Ethernet over Copper, depending on the bandwidth needed. Higher bandwidth requires a (fractional) FastE or GigE circuit delivered over fiber.
Ethernet over Copper does have a distance limitation though, you can only be that many 1000 feet away from the CO. Ethernet over Serial however runs on DS1s and has a far larger reach.
And of course for the higher bandwidth circuits there is EoDS3 and Ethernet over Fiber like FastE, GigE etc.
