According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index (VNI) 30 percent of all ip traffic will come from online video at the end of this year 2008. In 2012 it will even make up half of all traffic. Only 3 years ago online video was only 5 percent of all IP traffic.
Cisco says the growth is mostly due to the popularity of websites like YouTube. At the same time peer to peer traffic with the purpose of sharing videos is decreasing. In 2006 peer to peer traffic made up for 60 percent of all IP traffic, and at the end of last year (2007) it has decreased to 51 percent.
Global business IP traffic is forecast to grow strongly at a CAGR of 35 percent from 2007 to 2012. Increased broadband penetration in the small-business segment and the increased adoption of advanced video communications (such as Cisco TelePresence) in the enterprise are major drivers for business IP traffic growth. Business IP traffic will grow fastest in the developing markets and Asia-Pacific. In volume, North America will continue to have the most business IP traffic through 2012, followed by Asia-Pacific and Western Europe. For a more complete overview, see this PDF from Cisco.
